Invisible Cities / 1. Structure

If (lucky you) you haven't yet read* the Italo Calvino's masterpiece Invisible Cities / Le città invisibili (1972):
1. please, do it.
2. enjoy our quotes and images.

*If you have done it: the same (1.+2.)

All pictures are taken by us during the last Architecture Biennale of Venezia, hosted in the Giardini/Gardens and in the gorgeous spaces of the Arsenale (the huge former shipyard of Venezia), whereas the faceted wooden pieces are made by us.

pag. 27
[...] L'altrove è uno specchio in negativo. Il viaggiatore riconosce il poco che è suo, scoprendo il molto che non ha avuto e non avrà"  "Futures not achieved are only branches of the past: dead branches. [...] Elsewhere is a negative mirror. The traveler recognizes the little that is his, discovering the much he has not had and will never have."

pag. 12 Cities and Desire 2.
"But with all this, I would not be telling you the city's true essence; for while the description of Anastasia awakens desires one at a time only to force you to stifle them, when you are in the heart of Anastasia one morning your desires waken all at once and surround you. The city appears to you as a whole where no desire is lost and of which you are a part, and since it enjoys everything you do not enjoy, you can do nothing but inhabit this desire and be content."

pag. 137
"At times I feel your voice is reaching me from far away, while I am prisoner of a gaudy and unlivable present, where all forms of human society have reached an extreme of their cycle and there is no imagining what new forms they may assume. And I hear, from your voice, the invisible reasons which make cities live, through which perhaps, once dead, they will come to life again."
